Willow by Ronie Kendig

About the Book

Title: Willow
Series: The Metcalfes #2
Author: Ronie Kendig
Genre: Clean with faith elements, Romantic Suspense
Publisher: Task Force Press
Release Date: April 22, 2022

To save her, he must become the evil he fights.

Aftercare specialist Willow Metcalfe joined Mission: Liberate Everyone to help trafficking survivors navigate the healing process. When MiLE’s Obioma Compound is attacked by the Nigerian mafia, she’s taken hostage. Against nightmarish odds, she and the victims attempt an escape—and are thwarted.

A decade after leaving his beloved homeland, Chijioke “Chiji” Okorie returns to find his sister and fight for his own country. Believing a global trafficking ring behind her abduction and a string of kidnappings across Nigeria, he goes undercover to find the head of the serpent and his sister. Chiji is stunned to discover among the hostages a familiar face—a friend’s sister, Willow. The woman he vowed years ago to marry.

The man who has interfered with her escape attempts seems … familiar, kind—but Willow knows better. He reeks of the warrior ethos that has devoured many a good man. Engaged in an impossible battle and losing at every turn, Chiji is determined to complete his missions—all of them. Even if it kills him.

My Review

Willow
by Ronie Kendig
Book 2 in the Metcalfes series
Rating: 4.5/5

I was so excited to read what came next in this series, that I devoured the story. It jumps right in and hooks you from the start. I absolutely loved the story and its adrenaline-filled suspense. As someone who is passionate about social justice especially when it comes to human trafficking, I have loved how the author wasn’t afraid to go where she needed to go to express the horrors and psychological trauma that occurs. She even gives a warning in the beginning of the book regarding what she felt she needed to include in the story. The author also took strides to keep the Nigerian characters as authentic as possible with the help of some of her readers. Ronie Kendig delivers another thriller that you won’t be able to put down. I believe you can still read this story as a standalone but I highly recommend reading Stone first because it will help give a little bit more background and you won’t be disappointed with the story.

First, the cover is gorgeous. However, as the story is set in Nigeria and on the water, I don’t think her clothing is quite right and not sure the background really fits but that might just be me being nit-picky lol.
Second, the story is really good and keeps you engaged. The suspense is real and the stakes seem higher than normal. The changes in POV help drive the story forward.
Third, the main characters are endearing and undergo powerful character development. Some faith elements come into play but they help move the story forward and bring more character development. The chemistry between the two characters was great. Chiji’s character could have come off in a negative way but the author does a good job of making him more sympathetic and sweet. I also loved Willow’s relationship with Ife.

Highly recommend if you enjoy Christian romantic suspense that isn’t afraid to address the horrors of human trafficking and spotlight those that are fighting against the darkness. The author includes some different organizations that you can donate to at the end of the story.

My thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.

What would you do if the world’s biggest K-pop star asked you to prom? Perfect for fans of Jenny Han and Sandhya Menon, this hilarious and heartfelt novel brings the glamour and drama of the K-pop world straight to high school.

Elena Soo has always felt overshadowed. Whether by her more successful older sisters, her more popular twin brother, or her more outgoing best friend, everyone except Elena seems to know exactly who they are and what they want. But she is certain about one thing – she has no interest in going to prom. While the rest of the school is giddy over corsages and dresses, Elena would rather spend her time working to save the local community center, the one place that’s always made her feel like she belonged.

So when international K-pop superstar Robbie Choi shows up at her house to ask her to prom, Elena is more confused than ever. Because the one person who always accepted Elena as she is? Her childhood best friend, Robbie Choi. And the one thing she maybe, possibly, secretly wants more than anything? For the two of them to keep the promise they made each other as kids: to go to prom together. But that was seven years ago, and with this new K-pop persona, pink hair, and stylish clothes, Robbie is nothing like the sweet, goofy boy she remembers. The boy she shared all her secrets with. The boy she used to love.

Besides, prom with a guy who comes with hordes of screaming fans, online haters, and relentless paparazzi is the last thing Elena wants – even if she can’t stop thinking about Robbie’s smile…right?

About the Author

Kat Cho used to hide books under the bathroom sink and then sneak in there to read after bedtime. Her parents pretended not to know. This helped when she decided to write a dinosaur time-travel novel at the tender age of nine. Sadly, that book was not published. She currently lives and works in NYC and spends her free time trying to figure out what kind of puppy to adopt. Kat is the internationally bestselling author of the Gumiho duology (Penguin) and Once Upon a K-Prom (Disney).

My Review

Once Upon a K-Prom
by Kat Cho
Rating: 4/5

Wow. Having never read anything from Kat Cho, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. As an Asian-American, I was super impressed with the author’s ability to relate meaningful and multidimensional characters. After recently seeing Everything Everywhere All At Once in theaters, I was even more drawn into the family relationships among Asian immigrants. Although the author speaks from a Korean perspective, I felt it was applicable to many. I’d love to see this book as a movie.

First, the cover is ridiculously cute and dreamy.
Second, the story was so high school but not. LOL. The hierarchy and the insecurities were all present but with an interesting K-Pop background to add some glam (and drama). Who doesn’t love a story about childhood sweethearts reuniting years later? Everyone deserves a second chance, right?
Third, although at times the main character, Elena, made me frustrated with her defense mechanisms, I still was able to relate to her in a sympathetic way – her character did not become annoying which was refreshing. Robbie is a sweetheart and I loved reading about his journey. As an amateur musician and songwriter myself, it was fun to get a glimpse into another talented soul and their passions. The bios for the rest of the Korean boy band were fun too.
Fourth, the story has a great message for young people regarding family and friendships and how the past can affect your future.

Highly recommend if you enjoy YA rom-coms with K-Pop and childhood sweethearts.

PG-13: a handful of swear words

My Review

Driving Force
by Lynette Eason & Kate Angelo
Book 1 in the Elite Guardians Collection
Rating: 4.5/5

“God was her rock, the one who trained her hands for war and her fingers for battle. She refused to let her training fail her now.”

As a huge fan of Lynette Eason, I was super excited to get my hands on an ARC for the new book in her Elite Guardians Collection. Newcomer Kate Angelo does an amazing job of expanding on Eason’s Elite Guardians series and bringing her own voice to a fantastic series with strong female leads. And you can definitely read this as a standalone novel if you haven’t read the Elite Guardians series yet.

First, the book cover is great and quite eye-catching. The heroine is front and center and looks incredibly capable.
Second, the story dives in right away. This story is fast-paced, adrenaline-filled and full of suspense. I was completely hooked from the first chapter.
Third, the main characters are strong yet relatable. Christina has her own ghosts but she does her job well and seems to do it better than others. She is guarded at first but learns to trust. Grey suffers from PTSD and doubts his abilities after becoming wheelchair-bound. I loved how the authors highlighted a hero with a disability and they were not afraid to deal with some of his demons.
Fourth, Boss is amazing, loyal, intelligent, and so adorable. That is all. 😉
Fifth, I always enjoy when an author can incorporate faith aspects into their writing in a non-forced way. The message is very applicable and authentic.

Highly recommend if you enjoy Christian romantic suspense that hooks you from the start and keeps you guessing till the end!

My thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.
