Where do you find safety when your world is falling apart?
Apprentice Flick thought the Elite Academy was the answer to all her problems. But the revelation of her past turned everything upside down. Now, she is caught between two worlds set on a collision course.
Will she embrace the chaotic memories that flood her every waking moment? Or will she run to the security of her Elite training?
Discovering her parents’ identities takes her to a secret underground bunker where she finds new friends, opportunities, and maybe even love. But Flick must decide where her allegiances lie soon, or the Triumph of Love festival might bring about her demise.

Excerpt

My name is Kerr Flick. Or Cadence. Or . . . something. I don’t know. A month ago, if anyone told me that my Dorm Leader would be offering to break the law for me, I would have laughed. No—worse than that. I probably would have reported them for losing their minds.
But that was before.
Before the Filtering exam.
Before my best friend became an alien.
Before I discovered that I’m not actually Kerr Flick at all.
On all the infotab entertainment streams, you always get some kind of warning about bad things ahead. Ominous music builds. The shadows lengthen onscreen. The hero walks down the darkening street while the camera flicks to the nightmare waiting around the corner.
All I got was a cold, grey concrete bunker and a rush of unwanted memory.
“My mother was a Hater . . .”
Like a starving waif I snatched at Akela’s solution before I could think. Would I have jumped so quickly to retrieve my memory if I’d known what I would find? Would it have made a difference if I knew what was going to happen next?

About the Author

Kristen Young is an award-winning Australian author who loves disappearing into imaginary worlds. Pastoral work is her calling, writing is her passion, and her family is her love. In her spare time she likes curling up with her ‘writerdog’ Oscar, a cup of coffee and a good book. If she was in an RPG, her weapons of choice would be a notebook and pen, so it’s pretty safe to say she wouldn’t last all that long… You can catch up with all of Kristen’s writing at www.krisyoungwrites.com.

My Review

Elite
By Kristen Young
Book 2 in the Collective Underground series
Rating: 4/5

It’s always interesting returning to a series you started reading but not being sure you’ll like the sequel. Don’t be fooled; you will enjoy this next installment from the author. She further expands this universe and does not disappoint. She has a way of drawing the reader into her world and making you care for her characters. When secrets are revealed, things get a little more crazy but the author is just getting started and you can’t stop reading. My only wish is to hear the song for real. I love how the author weaves in the faith aspects.

Highly recommend if you love YA dystopian with lots of sci-fi adventure and mystery with a hint of romance.

My thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.

More from Kristen

“Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.” ― G.K. Chesterton.

Why do we write fiction? There are lots of reasons, really. We write because we have something
to say. Maybe we write because we just love creating stories. Perhaps we love to entertain. Or
perhaps we write because the stories want to be heard, and we’re just letting them fly.

Or perhaps we know that people want stories for a deeper reason. When life is hard, and work
is a struggle, and the world seems just a little too difficult, it’s a great time to escape into a
different place. Another world, where even though bad things happen, we know there will be a
happy ending.

The responsibility of authors is a heavy one. Our readers entrust their imaginations to us for a
short time, allowing us to draw them into a different place. We give them people to follow, and
let them see the world through other eyes. Dilemmas, threats, relationships and opportunities
— all of these things provide a journey for readers, and give them the chance to explore
alternate ways of dealing with life’s problems. We give people the thrill of knowing that even
under the heaviest challenges, there is a chance to grow and survive.

Chesterton said that children didn’t need to learn about dragons, but to know the dragons could
be overcome. Perhaps even as adults we need a little bit of that, too.
